C Media 8738 Game Port Driver



C Media CMI8738 DM Driver is a driver used only for Windows XP. It strictly requires a computer with CMI8378 audio card. It contains driver for all PCI cards and are based on the CMI8378 chipset. This program supports music synthesis, equalizer, reverbs, multi-channel 3D, gaming and audio.

C Media CMI8738 WDM Driver for Windows XP is licensed as freeware for PC or laptop with Windows 32 bit and 64 bit operating system. It is in drivers hardware category and is available to all software users as a free download.


The CMI8738 driver package contains a driver for PCI cards that are based on the CMI8378 chipset. This driver is for Windows XP only, and requires a computer with a CMI8738-based audio card. C-Media does not provide end user support for drivers, so please contact your hardware manufacturer if you need further support.


CMI-8738 supports the legacy audio - SBPRO, FM emulator, MIDI MPU-401 port. 8738-SX supports 4-channel 16-bit DACs to provide surround audio. 8738-LX or MX supports 6-channel DACs for 5.1 home theater environments and meet PC99 audio performance requirements. CMI8738-MX also provides S/PDIF digital audio interface I/O for 44.1KHz and 48KHz LPCM audio or Dolby Digital (AC-3), DTS Digital Surround 5.1 pass-through.


On the software side, CMI-8738 supports wavetable music synthesis, equalizer, reverbs, Karaoke, and multi-channel 3D positional gaming audio, Xear3D, EAX 2.0 functions with Windows Drivers. Linux driver is also available in most Linux OS versions.

Traditionally the game port was at 0x200-0x207, with 0x201 as the one usually used. So the driver code just tries to reserve 0x201 and 0x200, in that order, for joystick_port=1, and the given port otherwise, and then enables the joystick in the card. There's no proper detection, and no messages.


So, first check that the resource is free: Without the driver loaded (check with lsmod, use rmmod if necessary), edit the question with the output of cat /proc/ioports as root (as normal user, you don't see the ranges). If the 0x200 range is taken, we must find a way to free it.


In don't remember exactly where the gameport shows up, but if everything works (the range is free), you should now see gameport and some other modules in lsmod, and I think you should have a device /dev/js* or similar which you can test with jscal or jstest. If that happens but you don't get any reaction, try 0x200 next.


As I said, I don't remember exactly the module stack you need, and I don't have gameport hardware anymore. But I dug out my old joystick (which also happens to be a Logitech WingMan Extreme, no idea if "Digital" or not), looked at old files and googled a bit. Here's my current understanding of the module stack:


BTW, my Wingman is multi protocol (USB + ADI, possibly also analog), and came with a gameport-to-usb adapter cable which allows me to connect it to an USB port. Simpler than using an old soundcard. :-)


Latest versions of Winamp suffer an annoying bug (#1239) in ros that won't let you click on it as if the main window were transparent. I've done some tests and the last "clickable" and "working" version is 1.90. After 1.90 Winamp crashes but its main window is still clickable until 2.08. Special pack for ros made from 1.90 + 2.08 here. Gabriel_itAureal is known to use MF - multifunction entries in their INF. i have a C-Media CMI8738 pci card and im trying to get it to run on a hp d530 computer and i am having problems getitng sound to work i have tryed two games duke nukem 3d and the secret of monkey island both give no sound at all i have used the drivers from here -media-cmi8738.html when i configured the sound card in duke nukem 3d the fx rest will not play at all it just gives me an error and it trys to plays the musdic test but i here no sound if anyone has got this card to work in dos please let me know how you did it ?

I have a GA-X58A-UD3R(rev. 2.0) motherboard with a Realtek ALC889 codec (HDA_INTEL driver) and a CMEDIA 8738 pci sound card and I have tried both in arch and they both sound worse than in windows. This is true when using ALSA and pulseaudio, which are the same anyway because pulse is using the ALSA backend. The sample rates are fine and PCM is set high enough, but I've noticed on both devices that the volume is lower in linux. I'm thinking the Windows drivers are just better in both cases, but I read somewhere the cmedia card is well supported in linux. The sound in windows seems to have more volume, bass and fullness. So my question is what am I doing wrong, if anything.
