Download Safari Mac 10.6
Apple's Safari web browser along with Firefox run as 64-bit applications by default in Mac OS X 10.6. When running in 64-bit mode Safari and Firefox aren't compatible with some versions of the Aspera Connect plug-in as it only works in 32-bit mode. You can run Safari or Firefox in 32-bit mode and then Aspera Connect will be detected by the Connect Server, Faspex Server or Shares Server you are accessing. Below are instructions to run Safari or Firefox in 32-bit mode.
For parts of Apple's customer base, the free-OS X strategy seems to be working: By Net Applications' tally, Mavericks accounted for 42% of all versions of OS X used in January. Mavericks' continued gains, however, have come mostly at the expense of Mountain Lion -- which lost 6 percentage points in the last two months -- and Lion, which dropped by 2 points in the same period. Yet Snow Leopard has been largely unaffected. Since October, when Mavericks appeared, OS X 10.6 has dropped less each month than either its 6- or 12-month average.
In the last couple of months, It was not uncommon to see people running Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard -- released in 2009), which is a long way from where we are now. Mac OS is currently 10.15.1 (Catalina). If you're using an older Mac OS, then you may have to upgrade to have any hope of Canvas running correctly.
If Safari is not your first browser of choice and using Internet Explorer for Mac is at the very least quite complicated, you can download any other stable and widely used browser out there and make it the default one on your macOS.
I would like to get it as updated as the Unibody will allow, but 10.6.8 on this machine will not connect to the AppStore. So I searched and downloaded both Lion and Mountain Lion upgrades directly from Apple Support.
EDIT - I found the Installer apps for both of these in the Applications folder, but when I run them, after typing my computer password, I get a message saying the Image could not be verified and may have been tampered with or failed during download. And the installer quits. Repeated downloads have shown no difference.
You can download MacOS Yosemite on your Mac by opening -us/HT211683 and clicking the link at the bottom of the page that says MacOS Yosemite (can upgrade Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard)
This worked perfectly! I was doing everything you said already, but didn't realize my choice of browser was the problem!! Safari in 10.6.8 doesn't handle web navigation well - something to do with Javascript I assume, but either way, I was browsing with and using Chrome originally. But Safari made the difference!! Yosemite installed just fine, and I'm in the process of getting Sierra. I'm opting out of High Sierra for now because of the potential problem one other post to my question pointed out. Thanks for all your help!!
My drive space wasn't an issue (the laptop had just gone through a clean erase and fresh install of 10.6.3) and I wanted to avoid using any extra drives or flash drives as a needed solution. (More cost = no bueno for me). But I greatly appreciate the insight into Sierra versus High Sierra!! I will definitely stick with Sierra for now.
These Release Notesalso convey a limitation concerning certain Apple Mac OS X versions with GoogleChrome and its workaround. This is in addition to the limitations carried overfrom the previous 10.6(10) release.

Total time to upgrade all expansion and/or remote school servers will depend upon the total number of servers and available bandwidth. The upgrade will be downloaded to each remote server, where the upgrade process will run automatically and take approximately one to two hours. If 'Remote update all servers' is selected, servers will be processed in groups of five, and upgrades will run concurrently on each group of remote servers.

The latest mobile operating system, iOS 5, requires the latest version of iTunes to install. Apple released a new version of its iTunes software for Windows on 11 October. If those two major upgrades were not enough, Apple also updated the Mac OS X Lion operating system with 10.7.2. A security update for Snow Leopard users, 10.6, is also available.
Users trying to access so many updates so close together are putting a strain on Apple servers, resulting in long download times and strange error messages when trying to install, according to irate users on Twitter and Apple support forums.
In the Mac OS X 10.7.2 update and the update for 10.6 (Snow Leopard), Apple fixed 75 known vulnerabilities in the operating system, Chester Wisniewski, senior security advisor at Sophos, told eWEEK. Most could lead to arbitrary code execution while others could result in denial of service or escalation of privileges, Wisniewski said.
X8 for Windows is also now available and the install is succesful as of Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, 10am. Note the Windows directions you are now required to download before downloading the installer file, say to install 7-zip to properly extract the licence.dat file. This is not necessarily required. If you right click on the zip file and see the option "Extract All" this should properly extract the installer and license file. Where you run into problems is just double-clicking on the zip file, then the installer won't see the license.dat file. Extract All or 7-zip solve this issue.
